Philsophy programs

Such permission will be granted only when the student can show how their proposed pair of Qualifying Papers speaks to the general program requirement to demonstrate across the pair of papers qualifying-level work by the candidate in both historical and systematic philosophical work.

At the end of the fourth semester graduate students should find a faculty member who will work with them in the fifth semester to help identify a thesis topic and work toward preparing a dissertation prospectus. Normally the format of the preparation is a tutorial that covers material that is essential for the prospectus.

The tutorial must result in some form of written work which will be shared with the prospective dissertation committee. At the beginning of the sixth term the committee meets to discuss the written work prepared during the prospectus tutorial. An oral examination of the prospectus will be arranged by the student in consultation with the dissertation committee and the Director of Graduate Studies.

If the prospectus needs to be revised, the revised version, approved by the dissertation committee, is submitted to the Director of Graduate Studies. The prospectus should take the form of a clear statement concerning the central subject of the dissertation, the specific problems or issues to be addressed and their importance, the approach the dissertation intends to take, and the literature or other materials to be used.

The function of the prospectus, not being the outline or the summary of the dissertation, is to focus as clearly as possible, for both student and dissertation committee, on the content and scope of the research he or she plans to carry out.

In preparing a prospectus, students are encouraged to keep in mind that it will serve as a guide to the committee in deciding 1 whether the topic is manageable within the prescribed limits; 2 whether the necessary materials are available; and 3 whether any specific background, such as some knowledge of another field, foreign language, etc. Prospectuses will obviously vary, depending on the topic, but the final version should be between 15 and 20 pages i.

Even though it does not have to be conclusive, the student should indicate some of the main arguments of the thesis. In this case, it can be more or less a chapter of the thesis. Final approval of the prospectus by the committee may be understood as a kind of contract committing the student to the pursuit of the specified topic and the department to the acceptance of that topic not the dissertation!

Since all research is an open-ended affair, it is understood that should a dissertation develop along lines that differ significantly from the original prospectus, the possibly changed dissertation committee may request a new prospectus. The Graduate School requires that the prospectus be approved not less than six months before the student intends to submit the dissertation. A student is admitted to candidacy after successful completion of all pre-dissertation requirements including approval of the prospectus.

In order to register for a seventh term, a student must have been admitted to candidacy. Registered doctoral candidates must have a principal adviser with an appointment on the Graduate School faculty. The Graduate School requires that each dissertation be read by at least three people but not more than five, at least two of whom hold faculty appointments in the Graduate School.

All readers must hold the Ph. The primary advisor must verify the description in a message sent to all readers of the dissertation. We leave it to the readers to factor this information into their judgment about the merit of the dissertation. No dissertation should be bound or submitted to the Graduate School until a PDF copy has been seen by the dissertation committee.

This document also includes format instructions for dissertations. An oral defense of the thesis is required. The M. Upon completion of all pre-dissertation requirements, including the prospectus, students are admitted to candidacy for the Ph. After they are admitted to candidacy students will be awarded a M.

Facilities In addition to the holdings of Sterling Memorial Library, there is one room devoted solely to philosophy books and journals.

Combined Programs The department has two combined PhD programs, one with classics and one with psychology. Mentoring and Advising The Director of Graduate Studies serves as official advisor to all graduate students. Admissions The department considers applications by all qualified applicants who will have completed undergraduate training before matriculation. Financial Aid Students are normally given six years of full support — tuition, plus stipend, plus health care.

Top of the Page II. Course Work A total of 12 term courses must be completed in two years. Due Dates for Course Work Course work should be completed by the end of the semester. Teaching Every student is required to have teaching experience in at least two different areas.

Nonetheless, our project has been able to gather enough data from programs to provide some guidance on this question, updating previous guidance. Importantly, this post doesn't assume a single metric of comparison, which distinguishes it from unilateral rankings of philosophy programs. It also provides a combination of subjective and objective measures, while rankings typically rely on one or the other. The only exception is the information on clusters, which comes from a paper currently under review.

See the end of the post for more information on the clusters. Worth noting is that the past success of these programs may be less predictive than usual, given the unknown impact of COVID on academic institutions. Below, programs are listed with asterisks to indicate if they show up in multiple sections.

To start, do current students and recent graduates recommend the program to prospective graduate students? The average for all programs is "somewhat likely" to recommend 4.

They are ordered below by topical cluster and then by average rating highest first. The majority of these programs are in the Core Analytic cluster dividing all programs into 8 clusters, the largest share end up in this cluster.

Of course, this is a rough guide to the overall topical focus of a program, some programs may be less of a good fit for a cluster than others, and many students and advisors in each program are likely to work on other topics.

The cluster may nonetheless give a sense of fit for prospective students. Carnegie Mellon University 4. The more people take part, the more useful PGR as a source of info for potential grad students. Ideally, I think about three times as many as do now should do it. Looks like Rutgers loves wisdom more than Princeton! Appreciate the reply Matt, I think you raise an important question which was the reason for my post.

Such a proposition is silly and nonsensical for the same reason the PGR is silly and nonsensical. What is your financial and personal situation? That this sort of status seeking and commodification of philosophy into luxury brands is probably an artifact of larger social ills, the fact that is was started by someone who calls themselves a Marxist is hilarious.

In my experience, the PGR allows all students to discover things about departments and programs that would otherwise be known only to students from more elite programs or with well-connected and professionally active mentors. In this sense it plays an equalizing role, despite lots of claims to the contrary. And it is this sense that is most important, since its central role is guiding prospective grad students. This is, at best a kind of conspicuous consumption where departments get to flaunt their status and occasionally do a little interdepartmental gossip.

After someone mentioned on FB the gender balance on the PGR political philosophy panel , I had a look at the full range of panels. But whether or not people think it matters, the pattern is very striking. The evaluation software permits any invited evaluator to assess any program in any subdiscipline. There were very few women in the great pool of evaluators to start with, and if self-selection meant that some subdisciplinary areas were entirely evaluated by men and nearly all overwhelmingly were , that strikes me as a major design fault in the entire project, Report.

I was invited to evaluate and have done so in the past. Just one case of course, but I wonder how many other women invited to evaluate found themselves making a similar call this year. The PGR is either a useful tool for a broken machine or a useless tool for a broken machine. Philosophy will waste away rather quickly if it continues to be conducted as a hyper-specialized practice within the walls of bourgeois institutions.

I have a couple of question that I am hoping someone can help me with. It seems like this system could lead to a situation in which higher prestige programs from regions with many high prestige programs are left off the way that teams with better records are left off of playoff rosters because they are in better conferences.

Likewise, it seems like we would want to know what considerations go into deciding whether a program is among the top of its region or not. The point of the survey is to figure out what the top programs are, but those deciding which programs to evaluate must already know what the top programs are because they make sure to only evaluate them.

These top schools will also get the advantage of always appearing in the report which, if nothing else, might guarantee their evaluation in the next report. If the regions have different numbers of programs, then programs in smaller regions those with fewer programs stand a better chance of being evaluated all things being equal which seems irrelevant to what the survey is supposed to be getting at.

Thanks for any help anyone can give in answering these questions! According to the survey, the following are the top 50 philosophy faculties in the English-speaking world: A ranking of PhD programs in philosophy in the English-speaking world from the Philosophical Gourmet Report.
