With a drum machine at his side, Nana Vasconcelos clothes us in local colors.

The electronic accents and attentive sense of evocation evoke Steve Tibbetts as the band coalesces into a shimmering, autoharp-laden catharsis. Riding a leviathan of strings, a voice recites numbers, as if in code. Mays at the keys makes this stage, gliding effortlessly along a landscape tessellated by a rainbow of impressions. The pianism of Mays for whom Evans was a formative influence could hardly be more fitting. To be sure, it glitters like the rest, only this time with the beads of falling tears.

If its colorful combination of sounds is meant to brighten our mood after the mournful turn that precedes it, then it certainly does the trick. Making or receiving a phone call is a form of travel in itself, for those precious moments of communication seem to collapse the two spaces that both speakers inhabit. And which of us has not, when experiencing something sonically profound, held up a phone so that the person on the other end could get some sense of the experience?

The tune had no name — the main feature was Metheny stepping up to a hard body string on a stand and plucking incredible single notes and strumming harmonics. Official word from Wichita Falls that denies the claim that the album title implies. I admit that this was a funny example of examining the obvious.

That said, there is something to be learned here. We can sometimes allow the failures of others to keep us from realizing our own potential. If something bad happens to someone who is close to us, it can give us license to fail. This was never more evident to me than my very own Uncle Tommy. Tommy was a talented artist, and a dancer. Tommy suffered from the disease of alcoholism and it claimed not only his life but his soul. He was perfectly content not taking responsibility for his own actions.

It was frustrating to those around Tommy who had reached out to him to try and help him. Out of 8 children, he was the one who possessed the greatest talents but also the only one who let the sins of his father, dictate his fate. Metaphorically, my grandfather was Wichita and Uncle Tommy was Wichita Falls and sadly for him, this title exemplified a very dreadful path.

The title of this album now serves as a reminder to me that failure is not due to an association with someone or something. No one is born under a black cloud. No one controls your destiny except YOU! Failure is a choice and playing a victim is an easy way and sometimes the most destructive way out!
