Led by UI English Professor Blaine Greteman, the Irish Writing Program is a rigorous and exciting creative writing study abroad program in Dublin, Ireland, designed to help aspiring writers become better at their craft.

When I was a boy in Iowa, each fall a flotilla of barges descended the Mississippi, laden with Iowa corn bound for New Orleans and then the world. Live and study the language. It will really stick with you once you have to start haggling at the market in Arabic or French.

Work abroad programs tend to be very competitive, but there will still be an opportunity out there to fit your experience, language proficiency, and professional goals! No matter your age, previous travel experience, or your taste for strong cheeses, international programs are the way to go.

With this in mind, it is essential to be cautious and aware of your surroundings wherever you go. This will vary depending on the program you choose, but for high school programs participants are typically between 14 and 18 years-old, and other programs will list their age limit — usually 18 and up.

This varies widely as some programs are designed for shorter-term opportunities — one to two weeks — while others are for longer term one to two months, or even up to a year. You can filter your search for international programs by duration, to find the one that best fits your schedule!

Make sure to spend time with your study abroad advisor on campus who handles international credit transfers. Some schools will even let you design a research project or independent study that can be completed in tandem with your international program.
