It be worn over the shoulder at all times. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury. You can be seriously injured by a twisted belt. If a belt is twisted, make it straight so it can work properly, or ask your dealer to fix it. Page 25 To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. The belt should go back out of the way. Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way.

If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle. Page 26 The best way to protect the fetus is to protect the mother. For pregnant women, as for anyone, the key to making safety belts effective is wearing them properly. Page 27 Lap Belt If your vehicle has a front bench seat, someone can sit in the center position. When you sit in the center front seating position, you have a lap safety belt, which has no retractor.

To make the belt longer, tilt the latch plate and pull it along the belt. Accident statistics show that unbelted people in the rear seat are hurt more often in crashes than those who are wearing safety belts. Page 29 Push the latch plate into the buckle until it clicks. If the belt stops before it reaches the buckle, tilt the latch plate and keep pulling until you can buckle Pull up on the latch plate to make sure it is secure. If the belt is not long enough, see Safety Belt Extender on page Page 30 The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs.

In a crash this applies force to the strong pelvic bones. If you slid under it, the belt would apply force at your abdomen. Rear shoulder belt comfort guides provide added safety belt comfort for older children who have outgrown booster seats and for small adults. Page 32 3. Be sure that the belt is not twisted and it lies flat.

Slide the guide under and past the belt. The elastic The elastic cord must be under the belt and the cord must be under the belt. Then, place the guide guide on top. Page 33 4. Buckle, position and release the safety belt as described in Rear Seat Passengers on page Make sure that the shoulder belt crosses the shoulder. To remove and store the comfort guides, squeeze the belt edges together so that you can take them out of the guides. What is the proper way to wear safety belts?

If possible, an older child should wear a lap-shoulder belt and get the additional restraint a shoulder belt can provide. Page 35 Never do this. Here two children are wearing the same belt. In a crash, the two children can be crushed together and seriously injured. A belt must be used by only one person at a time.

Page 36 Never do this. Here child is sitting in a seat that has a lap-shoulder belt, but the shoulder part is behind the child. If the child wears the belt in this way, in a crash the child might slide under the belt. Page 37 Every time infants and young children ride in vehicles, they should have the protection provided by appropriate restraints. Instead, they need to use a child restraint.

Page 38 Children who are up against, or very close to, any air bag when it inflates can be seriously injured or killed. Air bags plus lap-shoulder belts offer outstanding protection for adultsand older children, but not for young children and infants. Page 39 in a motor vehicle. If it is, the restraint will have a label saying that it meets federal motor vehicle safety standards. In addition, there are many kinds of restraints available for children with special needs.

Page 40 An infant car bed A , a special bed made for use in a motor vehicle, is an iniant restramt system designeu to restrain or position a child a continuous flat surface. Page 41 A forward-facing child seat C-E provides restraint for the child's body with the harness and also sometimes with surfaces such as T-shaped or shelf-like shields.

A booster seat F-G is a child restraint designed to improve the fit of the vehicle's safety belt system. Some booster seats have a shoulder belt positioner, and some high-back booster seats have a five-point harness. Page 42 How do child restraints work? A child restraint system is any device designed for use in a motor vehicle to restrain, seat, or position children. A built-in child restraint system is a permanent part of the motor vehicle.

Page 43 Where to Put the Restraint Accident statistics show that children are safer if they are restrained in the rear rather than the front seat. General Motors, therefore, recommends that child restraints be secured in a rear seat, including an infant riding in a rear-facing infant seat, a child riding in a forward-facing child seat and an older child riding in a booster seat.

It can help restrain the child restraint during a collision. For it to work, a top strap must be properly anchored to the vehicle. Some top strap-equipped child restraints are designed for use with or without the top strap being anchored. Page 45 Anchor the top strap to one of the following anchor points. Be sure to use an anchor point located on the same side of the vehicle as the seating position where the child restraint will be placed. To assist you in locating the lower anchors for this child restraint system, each seating position with the LATCH system will have a label sewn into the seatback at each anchor In a crash, the child could be seriously injured or killed.

Find the anchors for the seating position you want to use, where the bottom of the seatback meets the back of the seat cushion. Put the child restraint on the seat. Page 50 3.

Buckle the belt. Make sure the release button is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to.

To tighten the belt, pull up on the shoulder belt while you push down on the child restraint. Never put a rear facing child restraint in this seat. Page 52 5. Pull the rest of the lap belt all the way out of the 4. Make sure the release button is retractor to set the lock. Page 53 6. To tighten the belt, feed the lap belt back into the retractor while you push down on the child restraint.

You may find it helpful to use your knee down on the child restraint as you tighten the belt. Your vehicle has a frontal air bag for the driver and a frontal air bag for the right front passenger. Your vehicle may also have a side impact air bag for the driver, and another side impact air bag for the right front passenger. Page 55 Here are the most important things air bag systems: You cam oe , ,. Wearing your safety belt during a crash helps reduce your chance of hitting things inside the vehicle or being ejected from Air bags are designed to work Page 56 Both frontal a 1.

Safety belts help keep you in position for air bag inflation before and during a crash. Page 57 Bags? Page 61 In many crashes severe enough to inflate an air bag, windshields are broken by vehicle deformation. Additional windshield breakage may also occur from the right front passenger air bag. Air bags are designed to inflate only once. There are parts of the air bag systems in several places around your vehicle.

Your dealer and the service manual have information about servicing your vehicle and the air bag systems. Page Restraint System Check Restraint System Check Your Checking Restraint Systems Now and then, make sure the safety belt reminder light and all your belts, buckles, latch plates, retractors and anchorages are working properly.

Look for any other loose or damaged safety belt system parts. If you see anything that might keep a safety belt system from doing its job, have it repaired. After a very minor collision, nothing may be necessary. But if the belts were stretched, as they would be if worn during a more severe crash, then you need new parts. The frequency will also be displayed and, if the station is in stereo, the stereo indicator will also be displayed.

Cassette tapes should be stored in their cases away from contarninants, direct sunlight and extreme heat. Please start with a very important safety device in your vehicle: Buckle up. Page Drunken Driving Drunken Driving Death and injury associated with drinking and driving is a national tragedy.

Alcohol affects four things that anyone needs to drive a vehicle: Judgment Muscular Coordination A person who consumes food just before or during drinking will have a somewhat lower BAC level. Page The body takes about an hour to rid itself of the alcohol in one drink. No amount of coffee or number of cold showers will speed that up. A person with even a moderate BAC might not be able to react quickly enough to avoid the collision.

They are the brakes, the steering and the accelerator. All three systems have to do their work at the places where the tires meet the road. Avoid needless heavy braking. Suddenly, an animal jumps out in front of you. You slam on the brakes and continue braking. If one of the wheels is about to stop rolling, the computer will separately work the brakes at each front wheel and at both rear wheels. Page Traction Control System Tcs As you brake, your computer keeps receiving updates on wheel speed and controls braking pressure accordincjy.

Page This light should come on briefly when you start the engine. When this warning light is on, the system will not limit wheel spin. Page Steering Power Steering If you lose power steering assist because the engine stops or the system is not functioning, you can steer but it will take much more effort. Magnetic Speed Variable Assist Steering Your vehicle may have this optional steering system that continuously adjusts the effort you feel when steering at all vehicle speeds.

Page If you need to reduce your speed as you approach a curve, do it before you enter the curve, while your front wheels are straight ahead. Maintain a reasonable, steady speed. Wait to accelerate until you are out of the curve, and then accelerate gently into the straightaway. If the level of the shoulder is only slightly below the pavement, recovery should be fairly easy.

Ease off the accelerator and then, if there is nothing in the way, steer so that your vehicle straddles the edge of the pavement. Page Skidding In a skid, a driver can lose control of the vehicle.

But skids are always possible. One reason is that some drivers are likely to be impaired by alcohol or drugs, with night vision problems, or by fatigue.

Drive defensively. It can take a second or two, or even several seconds, for your eyes to readjust to the dark. Page The heavier the rain, the harder it is to see. Even if your windshield wiper blades are in good shape, a heavy rain can make it harder to see road signs and traffic signals, pavement markings, the edge of the roaa and even people walking.

Page Hydroplaning Hydroplaning is dangerous. So much water can build up under your tires that they can actually ride on the water. When your vehicle is hydroplaning, it has little or no contact with the road. Page City Driving City Driving One of the biggest problems with city streets is the amount of traffic on them.

Here are ways to increase your safety in city driving: Know the best way to get to where you are going. Page Freeway Driving Freeway Driving Mile for mile, freeways also called thruways, parkways, expressways, turnpikes or superhighways are the safest of all roads.

But they have their own special rules. The most important advice on freeway driving is: Keep up with traffic and keep to the right. Drive at the same speed most of the other drivers are driving. Expect to move slightly slower at night. When you want to leave the freeway, move to the proper lane well in advance. If you miss your exit, do not, under any circumstances, stop and back up. Or is it just plain falling asleep at the wheel?

Call it highway hypnosis, lack of awareness, or whatever. There is something about an easy stretch of road with the same scenery, along with the hum of the tires on the road, the drone of the engine, and the rush of the wind against the vehicle that can make you sleepy. Page Hill and Mountain Roads Driving on steep hills or mountains is different from driving in flat or rolling terrain. L N or with ignition off is dangerous.

Your brakes will have to do all the work slowing down. You would then have poor braking or even none going down a hill. Page Winter Driving Winter Driving Here are some tips for winter driving: Have your vehicle in good shape for winter YOU may want to put winter emergency supplies in your trunk. Page Driving on Snow or Ice Most of the time, those places where your tires meet the road probably have good traction.

However, if there is snow or ice between your tires and the road, you can have a very slippery situation. See Braking on page Allow greater following distance on any slippery road. Page Put on extra clothing or wrap a blanket around you. If you have no blankets or extra clothing, make body insulators from newspapers, burlap bags, rags, floor mats anything you can wrap around yourself or tuck under your clothing to keep warm.

You can run the engine to keep warm, but be careful. Start the engine again and repeat this only when you feel really uncomfortable from the cold. Workshop Manual Pages. Pontiac - Bonneville - Owners Manual - - Best Back Seat Organizer.
